How can crisis response help me?
The crisis worker can assess what is happening, calm the crisis and lay out a plan for keeping everyone safe. They can also connect you to other community-based resources to help you with ongoing needs and support.
What will happen if I call?
A mental health crisis worker will answer the phone and ask you to tell them what is happening. They will first ask you questions to see if you or someone you care about is in danger. They will collect some basic information and listen to what your needs are. Then they will help you think about what your options are for addressing the crisis. This may include an in-person visit at a place of your choosing.
Who will I talk to?
A crisis worker who is trained in mental health.
What are the credentials of the crisis team members?
They are mental health professionals and practitioners. Their background may be in social work, psychology, marriage and family therapy, counseling or nursing. Some teams also have Certified Family Peer Specialists.
How long will it take to get help?
The phones are staffed 24/7. If you decide you would like to have a crisis worker meet you in person, they will come as soon as possible that day.
Will this cost me anything?
There is no out-of-pocket cost to you. If your insurance covers this kind of service, we will bill them if we do an in-person visit.
What if I don’t have insurance?
You don’t need insurance to receive this service.
Is this confidential? Will you have to tell someone I called?
The call is confidential (private). However, if someone is at serious risk of harming themselves or others, the crisis worker may have to take action to ensure everyone’s safety.
I am a caring adult who is concerned about a young person. Do I have to get a hold of family member or guardian before I call?
You can call the team for help even if the guardian is not available. They will talk with you about the situation and help you decide the best next steps. It is usually required that the parent or guardian of a minor to be part of the process, but there are exceptions.
I am a young person in crisis. If I call you, do you have to call my parents?
The crisis worker will talk with you to see what is happening and how we can help. We usually want parents involved, but there are exceptions.
Can I text instead of calling?
Texting is not currently available for the crisis teams in the Twin Cities metro area.
